More Info
On this very spot stood the four palm trees that made up the 'Big W" where the money was buried in the 1967 comedy, 'It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world'. In the film, this place was Santa Rosita State Beach Park, but in real life was and still is a private residence.
Apparently as of 2003, only one tree remained, so i would doubt that any of them are left now, but the spot where they stood is still 'Hallowed Ground' in the world of famous comedies.
Interestingly, the scenes shot of the characters entering the park were filmed in a different location, (Peck Park) with a fake frontage built to replicate the entrance to the building here at Portugese Point. (Thanks to for this last bit of info.)
The entrance to this residence is available on Google streetview but it's a terrible picture, and of course the gardens can't be seen.
